Types of Commercial Mortise Hardware Available
Complete Passage Mortise Locksets
The current collection includes three complete Schlage L9010 passage mortise locksets, each using A rosette trim with a different lever design: 06, 07, or 17. Passage function allows the latch to be operated from either side without a locking function, making it appropriate for compatible interior commercial openings where controlled access or privacy is not required.
Schlage identifies the L9010 passage latch as ANSI F01. Because it does not use a keyed cylinder, selection is primarily based on the required door preparation, lever design, finish, door thickness, handing requirements, and compatibility with the surrounding hardware schedule.
Entry / Office Mortise Lock Bodies
The collection also includes a Schlage L9050 entry/office mortise lock body sold without the complete decorative trim package. Schlage identifies the L9050 as its entrance/office function, ANSI F04. In the complete L Series configuration, this function uses an exterior cylinder and interior thumbturn to control the outside lever while allowing interior egress.
Because the Coastal product is specifically sold as a lock body only, confirm the compatible lever or knob trim, cylinder, spindle, rose or escutcheon, strike, and other required components before ordering. A replacement lock body should not be treated as a complete ready-to-install lockset.
Storeroom Mortise Lock Bodies
The current collection includes the Schlage L283-134 lock body for the L9080 storeroom function. Schlage identifies L9080 as ANSI F07. In its complete configuration, the exterior lever remains fixed, a key from the outside retracts the latchbolt, and the interior lever remains available for egress.
Storeroom functions are commonly used where a door should remain secured from the outside after closing rather than being left unlocked until someone manually relocks it. Confirm that this function matches the facility's intended access plan before selecting replacement hardware.
Commercial Mortise Locks vs. Cylindrical Locks
Mortise and cylindrical locks use different internal construction and door preparation. A commercial cylindrical lock installs its chassis through a bored opening in the face of the door, while a mortise lock requires a larger prepared pocket in the edge of the door for the lock case.
Because the preparations are different, a Schlage L Series mortise lock is not a direct replacement for an ND or ALX cylindrical lock simply because the lever style or finish looks similar. Converting between the two platforms generally requires changes to the door preparation and should be evaluated as part of the complete opening.

Understanding Commercial Mortise Lock Functions

The current Coastal collection is limited to passage complete sets and two replacement lock-body functions, but Schlage's broader L Series supports many additional commercial functions.
- Passage - L9010: The latchbolt is operated by the lever from either side at all times. No keyed locking function is provided.
- Entry / Office - L9050: In a complete configuration, the outside lever can be locked or unlocked using the exterior key or interior thumbturn while the inside lever remains available for egress.
- Storeroom - L9080: In a complete configuration, the outside lever remains fixed and entry requires a key, while the inside lever operates freely for egress.
Schlage also offers classroom, privacy, apartment, institutional, deadbolt, and other functions throughout the broader L Series. Those functions should not be assumed to be available in this Coastal collection unless a corresponding product is actually listed.

Schlage publishes a standard L9000 Series case size of 4-7/16" x 6-1/16" x 1" and a 2-3/4" backset. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4", with supported optional door-thickness configurations available. These dimensions are useful when evaluating an existing opening, but complete compatibility also depends on function, trim, cylinder preparation, strike, handing, and other details.
The broader L Series also offers numerous lever and trim choices. The current Coastal collection is much narrower and presently includes complete passage sets with 06, 07, and 17 lever designs plus two separate replacement lock bodies.
Materials, Lever Styles & Finishes
Schlage's L9000 Series lock case is manufactured from cold-rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. L Series lever and trim materials vary by design and can include forged brass, cast stainless steel, wrought brass, and stainless steel. Because the current collection combines complete locksets with bare lock bodies, there is no single exterior material specification that accurately describes all five products.
The three complete passage locksets currently appear in Satin Chrome. The two replacement lock bodies are listed with an unspecified finish because the internal lock case is not decorative exterior trim. Shoppers should therefore select the visible finish based on the complete lever, rose, escutcheon, and other trim used with the lock rather than the internal lock body.
When matching an existing commercial opening, use Schlage's exact finish designation. The complete passage sets currently shown in this collection use Satin Chrome, commonly designated 626 within architectural hardware specifications.

Installation & Compatibility
Commercial mortise locks require dedicated door preparation for the lock case, armor front, lever or knob spindle, cylinders or thumbturns when applicable, and strike. They should not be installed using the same preparation as a conventional residential or commercial cylindrical lock.
Schlage currently specifies a 4-7/16" x 6-1/16" x 1" case for the L9000 Series and a 2-3/4" backset. The L9080 lock body currently listed by Coastal Hardware is likewise shown with a 4-7/16" x 6-1/16" x 1" case, 2-3/4" backset, 1-3/4" door thickness, and 1-1/4" x 8" latch faceplate.
Those shared measurements do not mean every lock body can be substituted for another function. Internal components and operation differ between passage, entry/office, storeroom, classroom, privacy, and other L Series functions. When replacing an existing body, identify the complete Schlage function number whenever possible before ordering.
