Double Cylinder Deadbolts

Double Cylinder Deadbolts for Entry Doors

Double cylinder deadbolts use a keyed cylinder on both sides of the door, requiring a key for operation from both the exterior and interior. This differs from a single cylinder deadbolt, which typically combines an exterior keyed cylinder with an interior thumbturn. Double cylinder configurations may be considered for certain exterior-door applications where keyed operation on both sides is appropriate.

Coastal Hardware Store carries double cylinder deadbolts from brands represented in the current collection, including Emtek, Baldwin Estate, Baldwin Reserve, Better Home Products, Kwikset, Linnea, Schlage, and Sure-Loc. Shoppers can compare round, square, rectangular, traditional, contemporary, and decorative trim designs across a broad selection of manufacturer finishes. Why Choose a Double Cylinder Deadbolt?

A double cylinder deadbolt can be useful in specific applications where having a keyed cylinder on both sides of the door is appropriate. Because there is no interior thumbturn, someone cannot simply operate the inside turn piece without a key. However, this same design affects emergency egress, so the door application and applicable building or fire requirements should always be reviewed before selecting this function.

• Keyed operation on both sides: A key is required to lock or unlock the deadbolt from either side of the door.
• Option for certain glazed-door applications: Double cylinder deadbolts are sometimes considered for doors with nearby glass because there is no interior thumbturn that can be reached and turned after the glass is broken.
• Multiple trim styles: The current collection includes round, square, rectangular, arched, traditional, contemporary, and other decorative deadbolt designs.
• Broad finish selection: Shoppers can coordinate the deadbolt with handlesets, knobs, levers, hinges, and other visible entry hardware using manufacturer-specific finish options.
• Multiple manufacturers: The collection includes double cylinder deadbolts from several residential and architectural hardware brands.
• Project flexibility: Available designs range from straightforward residential deadbolts to more decorative trim intended to coordinate with larger entry-hardware packages.

Double Cylinder Deadbolt Styles Available

Round Double Cylinder Deadbolts

Round deadbolt trim provides a simple profile that works with many traditional, transitional, and contemporary entry designs. The current collection includes round designs from multiple manufacturers, with finish availability varying by individual product and series.

Square & Rectangular Double Cylinder Deadbolts

Square and rectangular deadbolts offer more defined geometric lines and are often selected for contemporary, transitional, or modern door hardware. The current collection includes square and rectangular options as well as variations with softer, chamfered, or recessed profiles.

Decorative & Traditional Double Cylinder Deadbolts

For entries that call for more decorative hardware, shoppers can compare traditional, arched, rustic, rope-detail, and other manufacturer-specific deadbolt designs. When coordinating a decorative deadbolt with a handleset, knob, or lever, compare the exact trim family and finish rather than relying on finish names alone.

How to Choose the Right Double Cylinder Deadbolt

Start by confirming that a double cylinder function is appropriate for the door and permitted for the application. Then compare the existing door preparation, cylinder and keying requirements, trim design, finish, and manufacturer specifications before ordering.

• Confirm the cylinder function: Double cylinder deadbolts require a key on both the exterior and interior. If interior thumbturn operation is preferred or required, consider a single cylinder deadbolt instead.
• Review egress requirements: Because a key is needed to unlock the door from the inside, double cylinder deadbolts may not be appropriate or permitted on certain required egress doors. Confirm applicable building, fire, and life-safety requirements before installation.
• Measure the existing preparation: Check the cross bore, edge bore, backset, door thickness, strike preparation, and any other dimensions specified for the individual deadbolt.
• Check nearby hardware: If the deadbolt will be installed above a knob, lever, or handleset, verify that the trim dimensions and spacing allow the components to be installed together without interference.
• Review keying requirements: Keyway, cylinder type, keyed-alike options, rekeying features, and compatibility with an existing key system vary by manufacturer and model.
• Coordinate the finish: Compare the exact manufacturer finish with the rest of the visible door hardware, particularly when matching a deadbolt to an existing handleset or entry set.

Materials, Styles & Finishes

The double cylinder deadbolt collection includes products across traditional, transitional, contemporary, modern, and decorative hardware styles. Materials and construction vary by manufacturer and product series, so shoppers should review the individual product specifications when material composition, construction, or a particular performance designation is important.

Current collection filters include finishes such as Flat Black, Matte Black, Satin Black, Satin Brass, Lifetime Satin Brass, Satin Nickel, Polished Nickel, Polished Chrome, Oil Rubbed Bronze, Venetian Bronze, Unlacquered Brass, Polished Brass, Satin Chrome, stainless steel finishes, bronze patinas, and additional manufacturer-specific options. Availability varies by model.

Finish names from different manufacturers should not be assumed to match exactly. Color, sheen, texture, and aging characteristics can differ even when two finishes have similar names, so use the manufacturer's exact finish information when coordinating hardware throughout an entry.

Installation & Compatibility

Double cylinder deadbolt installation requirements vary by manufacturer and model. Before ordering, compare the product specifications with the existing door preparation, including required bore dimensions, backset, door thickness, bolt and strike preparation, trim dimensions, cylinder configuration, mounting hardware, and any spacing requirements that apply to the complete entry set.

For replacement projects, do not assume that a new deadbolt will fit the same preparation, cover the same footprint, use the same keyway, or align with the existing strike simply because it has a similar appearance. When installing the deadbolt with a separate handleset, knob, or lever, confirm that the trim dimensions and center-to-center spacing are compatible.

Double cylinder locks also require special consideration because a key is needed for interior operation. Before installing one on an exterior or required egress door, confirm that the configuration complies with the building, fire, life-safety, and accessibility requirements applicable to the property and opening.

Frequently Asked Questions About Double Cylinder Deadbolts

What is a double cylinder deadbolt?

A double cylinder deadbolt has a keyed cylinder on both sides of the door. A key is therefore required to lock or unlock the deadbolt from either the exterior or interior side.

What is the difference between a single cylinder and double cylinder deadbolt?

A single cylinder deadbolt typically uses a keyed cylinder on the exterior and a thumbturn on the interior. A double cylinder deadbolt uses keyed cylinders on both sides. The correct configuration depends on the door application, security needs, and applicable egress requirements.

Are double cylinder deadbolts useful on doors with glass?

They may be considered for some doors with nearby glass because there is no interior thumbturn that can simply be reached and operated through a broken glass panel. However, the keyed interior side can also make emergency exit more difficult, so verify that a double cylinder lock is appropriate and permitted for the specific opening.

Are double cylinder deadbolts allowed on every exterior door?

No. Building and fire requirements can restrict locks that require a key or tool to open from the egress side. Requirements vary by location, occupancy, and door application, so confirm the applicable code requirements before choosing a double cylinder deadbolt for an exterior or required exit door.

Do all double cylinder deadbolts fit the same door preparation?

No. Bore dimensions, backset, door thickness, bolt preparation, strike requirements, trim dimensions, cylinders, and mounting details can vary by manufacturer and model. Compare the individual product specifications with the existing door before ordering.

Can double cylinder deadbolts be ordered keyed alike?

Keying options vary by manufacturer and product. Some deadbolts may support keyed-alike ordering or compatibility with particular key systems, while others may have different cylinder or keyway options. Confirm your keying requirements on the individual product page or with Coastal Hardware Store before placing the order.
