Why Choose an Electronic Smart Lock?
Electronic locks can simplify everyday access and provide additional ways to manage who can enter a property. The best choice depends on whether you need basic keypad entry or a connected smart lock, as well as the door application, preferred access methods, network requirements, and compatibility with your existing door.
- Keyless entry options: Supported products allow access through a keypad, touchscreen, fingerprint reader, smartphone, or another electronic credential instead of relying exclusively on a physical key.
- Programmable access: Many electronic locks allow users to create access codes for household members, guests, employees, or service providers. Code capacity and management features vary by model.
- Connected lock choices: The current collection includes Bluetooth, WiFi, and other connected configurations for shoppers who want smartphone-based access or monitoring.
- Mechanical backup options: Some electronic locks retain a keyed cylinder, while other configurations are key-free. Confirm the backup-access method of the exact product before purchase.
- Multiple hardware formats: Shoppers can compare electronic deadbolts, keypad levers, smart entry sets, and other configurations for different door applications.
- Architectural finish selection: Electronic hardware is available in numerous black, brass, nickel, chrome, bronze, and manufacturer-specific finishes for coordination with surrounding door hardware.
Types of Electronic & Smart Locks Available
Electronic Smart Deadbolts
Electronic deadbolts replace or supplement traditional keyed deadbolt operation with a keypad, touchscreen, smartphone connection, or another supported electronic access method. The current collection includes products ranging from standalone electronic keypad deadbolts to connected smart deadbolts with WiFi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave, or other model-specific technology. Review the exact connectivity and access features before ordering because they are not universal across smart deadbolts.
Electronic Keypad Lever Locks
Electronic lever locks combine a lever-operated latch with keypad or electronic access control. They can be useful on supported side doors, garage-entry doors, home offices, storage areas, and other openings where shoppers want code-based access without installing a separate electronic deadbolt. Available locking modes, user-code capacity, keyed backup, handing, and intended applications vary by product.
Smart Entry Sets & Handlesets
Smart entry sets combine electronic locking technology with the larger exterior grip and coordinated interior trim associated with an entry handleset. The current collection includes Emtek EMPowered configurations with multiple exterior grip and interior lever or knob combinations. If you prefer a traditional entry-hardware appearance with electronic access, compare our smart handlesets and verify exactly which exterior and interior components are included.
Bluetooth & WiFi Smart Locks
Connected smart locks can provide smartphone-based operation on compatible models. The current assortment includes Bluetooth-only configurations as well as products that support WiFi or offer WiFi as part of a specific configuration. WiFi can provide remote-access features on supported products, while Bluetooth generally requires the mobile device to be within local wireless range. Always check the manufacturer's connectivity requirements, app, network specifications, and supported features for the exact lock.
Keyed & Key-Free Electronic Locks
Electronic hardware does not automatically mean completely key-free. Some smart locks include a conventional keyed cylinder as an alternate entry method, while selected products are available without an exterior key cylinder. The current collection includes both keyed and key-free electronic configurations. Consider how you want to access the door during a battery or connectivity issue and review the manufacturer's backup-access method before selecting a model.
How to Choose the Right Electronic Smart Lock
Begin with the door and the type of access you want, then compare connectivity, electronic features, backup entry, door preparation, finish, and installation requirements. Smart-lock features can vary significantly even between products from the same manufacturer, so the model-specific specifications matter more than the general term "smart lock."
- Choose the hardware type: Determine whether the opening needs a deadbolt, electronic lever, smart handleset, interconnected lock, or another supported configuration.
- Decide how you want to enter: Compare keypad codes, touchscreens, fingerprints, smartphone access, physical keys, and other available credentials according to the specific product.
- Determine whether you need remote access: If controlling or monitoring the lock away from home is important, confirm that the selected model supports the required WiFi, bridge, hub, or other connection.
- Check smart-home compatibility: Do not assume every electronic lock works with the same app, voice assistant, automation platform, or smart-home ecosystem. Verify compatibility for the individual model.
- Review the door preparation: Compare bore dimensions, backset, door thickness, handing, latch or bolt preparation, and clearance requirements with your existing door.
- Understand backup access and power: Determine what happens if the batteries become depleted or connectivity is unavailable, including whether the model provides a physical key, external battery contact, or another manufacturer-specified backup method.
Materials, Styles & Finishes
Construction and materials vary by manufacturer, electronic platform, and product series. Because this collection includes deadbolts, levers, handlesets, and connected locks from several manufacturers, there is no single material or construction specification that applies to every product. Review the individual product specifications when base material, security rating, certification, weather exposure, or another construction characteristic is important to your project.
Electronic door hardware is available in more than purely contemporary styling. The current assortment ranges from streamlined touchscreen deadbolts and geometric keypad locks to traditional and transitional entry sets that incorporate electronic access technology into decorative architectural hardware.
Current collection finishes include options such as Aged Bronze, Antique Brass, Flat Black, Matte Black, Oil Rubbed Bronze, Polished Brass, Polished Chrome, Satin Black, Satin Brass, Satin Chrome, Satin Nickel, Unlacquered Brass, Venetian Bronze, and several manufacturer-specific lifetime, patina, and mixed finishes. Availability varies by product, and similarly named finishes from different manufacturers should not automatically be assumed to match exactly.
Featured Electronic Lock Brands
The current collection includes electronic locks from six residential and architectural hardware brands. Each manufacturer offers a different combination of electronic platforms, access methods, connectivity, styling, finishes, and installation requirements.
- Emtek: The current assortment includes EMPowered 2 smart deadbolts and entry sets as well as EMTouch electronic keypad deadbolts and levers. Supported EMPowered configurations include keyed and key-free Bluetooth options, with WiFi available on applicable configurations.
- Schlage: Schlage electronic products in the assortment include Encode Smart WiFi deadbolts, electronic keypad hardware, and selected smart interconnected locks. Connectivity and access-management capabilities depend on the individual model.
- Baldwin Estate: Baldwin contributes architectural touchscreen deadbolts, including selected connected Z-Wave options in a wide range of Baldwin finishes.
- Kwikset: Current Kwikset options include SmartCode electronic keypad products, with SmartKey Security and other features available on specific models rather than universally across the collection.
- Better Home Products: The current collection includes an electronic deadbolt option from Better Home Products for shoppers comparing additional keypad-lock choices.
- Sure-Loc: Sure-Loc adds additional electronic lock options to the assortment. Review each product page for its specific access method, function, dimensions, and electronic features.
Installation & Compatibility
Electronic lock installation requirements vary substantially by product. A smart deadbolt, electronic lever, full entry set, and interconnected lock can each require different door preparation. Before ordering, compare the manufacturer's specifications with the existing bore dimensions, backset, door thickness, latch or bolt preparation, handing, trim clearances, and any additional requirements for the selected lock.
Connectivity should also be considered before installation. A lock described as Bluetooth, WiFi, or Z-Wave may require a particular mobile app, wireless network, hub, bridge, or smart-home system to use certain features. Some models connect directly to a network while others depend on additional equipment. Verify what is required for the features you intend to use rather than assuming connectivity is included simply because the lock is electronic.
Battery type, replacement procedure, low-battery warnings, and backup-access methods also vary. Before installation, review the manufacturer's instructions and make sure you understand how the lock can be accessed if battery power is depleted. If you are replacing an existing mechanical deadbolt or lockset, do not assume the new electronic trim will cover the same footprint or use identical preparation.

Mechanical, finish, and electronic-component warranties can have different coverage periods even within the same product. Review the individual product page and applicable manufacturer warranty information for the exact electronic or smart lock you are considering.
Frequently Asked Questions About Electronic Smart Locks
What is the difference between an electronic lock and a smart lock?
An electronic lock uses electronic components for an access method such as a keypad or touchscreen but does not necessarily connect to a phone or network. A smart lock generally adds connected features such as Bluetooth, WiFi, Z-Wave, or another supported wireless technology. Exact capabilities vary by model, so check the product specifications rather than assuming every electronic lock offers remote access.
Do smart locks work without WiFi?
Some do. Certain locks use a keypad or Bluetooth without requiring WiFi for basic operation, while other models use WiFi for remote access, notifications, or additional connected features. Some systems may require a separate hub or bridge. Check the requirements for the specific lock and the features you want to use.
Can I still use a key with an electronic smart lock?
It depends on the model. Many electronic locks retain a keyed cylinder for backup or alternate access, while selected products are designed as key-free locks. The current collection includes both keyed and key-free configurations, so verify the access methods before ordering.
What happens if the batteries in a smart lock die?
Backup procedures vary by manufacturer and model. Depending on the lock, options may include a physical key, an external battery connection, or another manufacturer-specified method of providing temporary power or access. Review the instructions for the exact product so you know how to respond before the batteries are depleted.
Will a smart lock work with my existing door?
Not necessarily. Smart locks can have specific requirements for bore dimensions, backset, door thickness, handing, latch or deadbolt preparation, and interior clearance. Compare the manufacturer's specifications with your existing door before ordering, especially when replacing older or non-standard hardware.
Do all smart locks work with the same smart-home systems?
No. Compatibility varies by manufacturer and model. A lock may use Bluetooth, WiFi, Z-Wave, or another connection and may support only particular apps, hubs, voice assistants, or home-automation platforms. Verify the exact compatibility information for the product before purchase.
