Von Duprin Exit Devices & Commercial Door Hardware

Von Duprin Exit Devices & Commercial Door Hardware

Von Duprin specializes in commercial exit hardware for doors that require reliable egress operation and application-specific configurations. The current Coastal Hardware Store assortment is focused on Von Duprin 98/99 Series exit devices and compatible trim, including rim devices, fire-rated configurations, surface vertical rod hardware, and lever trim.

Von Duprin offers multiple exit-device types and options for commercial openings, but specifications vary significantly by model. Shoppers should compare device series, door width, fire-rating requirements, latching method, trim, handing, and door preparation before ordering. For additional products used in commercial openings, browse our commercial door hardware.

Why Choose Von Duprin Exit Devices?

• Commercial exit hardware: Von Duprin manufactures exit devices for commercial, institutional, healthcare, educational, and other building applications.
• Multiple device types: The 98/99 Series includes rim, surface vertical rod, concealed vertical rod, mortise, and other configurations depending on the application.
• Fire-rated options: Current Coastal listings include specific fire-rated Von Duprin exit devices. Fire-rating requirements should always be verified for the exact opening and product.
• 98 & 99 Series designs: The 98 Series uses a smooth mechanism case, while the 99 Series uses a grooved mechanism case.
• Compatible trim: Exterior lever and other trim options can be paired with supported Von Duprin devices when the model, function, handing, and preparation are compatible.

Types of Von Duprin Hardware Available

98 Series Rim Exit Devices

Von Duprin 98 Series rim devices use a smooth mechanism case and a surface-mounted latch configuration. Current Coastal Hardware Store listings include both standard and fire-rated 98 Series rim devices. Von Duprin specifies current 98/99 rim devices as ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1 and UL listed for panic exit hardware; verify the exact listing required for your project.

99 Series Surface Vertical Rod Exit Devices

The 99 Series uses a grooved mechanism case. Current Coastal inventory includes a fire-rated 9927 surface vertical rod configuration with less-bottom-rod and auxiliary-fire-latch features. Because vertical rod hardware depends heavily on door construction and required latching, review the exact device and installation documentation before ordering.

Von Duprin Exit Device Trim

The current Coastal assortment also includes compatible Von Duprin lever trim for 98/99 Series rim and vertical devices. Trim selection should be based on the exit device series, desired exterior operation, handing, cylinder requirements, and door preparation.

How to Choose the Right Von Duprin Exit Device

• Identify the device type: Determine whether the opening requires rim, surface vertical rod, concealed vertical rod, mortise, or another configuration.
• Check door width: Von Duprin exit devices are offered in different device lengths for compatible door widths. Match the product to the actual door rather than choosing by appearance.
• Confirm fire-rating requirements: If the opening is fire rated, select a product specifically identified for that application and verify the complete opening requirements.
• Choose compatible trim: Exterior lever trim, cylinders, and other components must be compatible with the selected exit device and required function.
• Review handing and preparation: Some configurations or options require handing or specific door and frame preparation. Follow the exact manufacturer documentation.

Series, Styles & Finishes

Von Duprin's 98 and 99 Series share a common general platform but differ visually: the 98 Series has a smooth mechanism case, while the 99 Series has a grooved mechanism case. Both series support multiple device types and mechanical or electrified options depending on the model.

The current Coastal Hardware Store Von Duprin products I could verify are listed in Satin Chrome. Von Duprin manufactures additional finishes and configurations, but availability should be confirmed on the exact Coastal product page rather than assumed across the entire collection.

Featured Von Duprin Hardware

• 98 Series Rim Device: Current Coastal listings include a 4' smooth-case rim exit device.
• 98 Series Fire-Rated Rim Device: A 3' fire-rated smooth-case rim configuration is currently represented.
• 9927 Fire-Rated Surface Vertical Rod Device: A current Coastal configuration uses the grooved 99 Series case with less bottom rod and auxiliary fire latch.
• 98/99 Lever Trim: Current Coastal inventory also includes 06 lever escutcheon trim for compatible rim or vertical devices.

Installation & Compatibility

Exit-device installation is application specific. Before ordering, compare the device series, door width and thickness, door material, fire rating, handing, latching configuration, strike, trim, cylinder, and existing preparation with Von Duprin's template for the exact model.

Do not assume that one 98/99 device can directly replace another simply because the exterior case looks similar. Rim and vertical rod devices require different door and frame preparation, and fire-rated openings can have additional requirements. For commercial or regulated openings, installation and specification by a qualified hardware professional may be appropriate.

• Warranty: Allegion's current commercial warranty lists 98/99 Series exit devices with a 10-year mechanical warranty and 3-year electro-mechanical warranty from factory shipment. Warranty periods for trims, kits, parts, other Von Duprin series, and specialized products can differ, so review the current warranty for the exact product being ordered.

Frequently Asked Questions About Von Duprin Exit Devices

What is the difference between Von Duprin 98 and 99 Series exit devices?

The primary visible difference is the mechanism case. Von Duprin's 98 Series has a smooth case, while the 99 Series has a grooved case. Both series are available in multiple exit-device configurations and options.

What is a rim exit device?

A rim exit device uses a surface-mounted latch at the edge of the door rather than vertical rods or a mortise lock. The current Coastal collection includes Von Duprin 98 Series rim configurations.

Does Von Duprin offer fire-rated exit devices?

Yes. Current Coastal Hardware Store listings include specific fire-rated Von Duprin rim and surface vertical rod exit devices. Always verify the required fire listing and complete opening requirements for the exact project.

What is a surface vertical rod exit device?

A surface vertical rod device uses rods mounted to the face of the door to engage latching points at the top and, depending on the configuration, bottom of the opening. Some specialized configurations use less-bottom-rod arrangements with other approved components.

Can I add lever trim to a Von Duprin exit device?

Compatible exterior trim is available for supported Von Duprin devices. Match the trim to the exit-device series, device type, desired function, handing, cylinder requirements, and door preparation before ordering.
